Expertise

  • Interested in the structure-property relationship, synthesis and chemistry of biomineral inspired materials based on chitobased biopolymers to serve as mechanically robust structural or functional materials. Interests focus on how chitobased biopolymers interact in bulk systems and how this affects the mechanical properties at the nano-, micro-, and macro-scales. For this, he also investigates biominerals for underlying evolutionary principles that guide the development of more sustainable materials and synthetic methods.
  • Important research activities related to the synthesis, modification and self-assembly of functional polymer systems in the areas of covalent organic networks (COFs) and biomineralisation/bio-inspired materials from renewable resources.
  • First identification of the amorphous persistent mineral santabarbaraite, a new biominal, in the teeth of the beetle snail Cryptochiton stelleri (2021)
  • Successful transfer of essential principles of biomineralisation to a new chemical manufacturing process for a paste for additive manufacturing of amorphous, bio-inspired composite materials with high mechanical performance (2021)
  • First pore polarity adjustment in micropores of COFs for targeted modification of the adsorption behaviour of gases (2015)
  • Tailoring molecular building blocks to improve and explore photocatalytic hydrogen production with postulation of charge/energy transfer processes (2015, 2018)
  • First-time application of covalent organic networks for photocatalytic hydrogen production and water vapour storage (2014, 2015)
